Project Overview

Garmin Blaze, Training and Tracking Horses as Athletes

Garmin's Blaze Equine health and wellness system launched in August 28th, 2025. Blaze enables horse trainers to track horse health and training with a sensor, mobile, and watch app system.

My main internship project focused on designing post-launch features that expanded the capabilities of the mobile app. Due to the confidential nature of the work, I'm not able to disclose details on my portfolio.

If you're interested in learning more, I'd happy to chat over a call.

Internship Achievements

Make Blaze More Flexible and Robust

During my internship, I worked with PMs, subject matter experts, designers, and developers to shape the future of the Blaze app.

Some highlights include:

  • Designed mobile and watch interfaces, translating complex requirements into intuitive solutions.
  • Advocated for and implemented design system enhancements that strengthened the visual identity and clarity.
  • Led the exploration for a major structural overhaul of the app, streamlining workflows, and introducing 12 new features.

Reflections

Context is King

Use Cases Build Empathy

Framing the problem clearly is key to making a strong case for design decisions. Documenting use cases and sharing their context during critiques helps the team understand the “why” behind the work, building empathy and driving more focused discussions.

Save the Scrapped Designs

Just because a design isn't approved for a project doesn't mean it should go to the graveyard forever. Sometimes bits of old iterations should be repurposed for new use cases. Also, document why the iteration didn't work to provide context for design decisions.
